We caught up with Copenhagen Wolves' Casper "cadiaN" Moller to talk about the Danish team who qualified for DreamHack Winter on Saturday.
Copenhagen Wolves initially failed to qualify for DreamHack Winter, but were granted a spot in the Last Call qualifier after both Titan and Epsilon were removed from the tournament.
There the Danes beat 3DMAX for a spot, and eventually FlipSid3 for an easier group, and now stand a realistic chance at making the playoffs at a major event, starting tomorrow.
cadiaN talked to us about his team and DreamHack
How well prepared do you feel for DreamHack? Did you change a lot of things in how you play or simply focus on refining your current style? Did you take part in the official Inferno Online bootcamp, considering the problems having all teams on-site might bring?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: We have had a loose play-style since the beginning. We have an extremely talented IGL in gla1ve, who is very good at adapting throughout the game, which we try to benefit from as much as possible. We have increased our repertoire with some strategies, so we always have something to fall back on in case our default setups don’t accomplish the entry kills and information which is needed. We are not bootcamping at Inferno Online, since we all have school and it’s simply too much to miss out on, since we already lost a lot of hours due to recent LAN’s.
What’s your stance on the stickers? Were you surprised at how much money teams made from them for ESL One Cologne? Do you think more of the money should be allocated towards prizes? As things stand, the Legends capsule pays (per Cologne) more than winning the event.
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: Great decision by Valve to create these stickers, makes it fun for the players, fans and newcomers to the scene. I really enjoy the “Pick’Em Challenge” since it is fun because everyone is fighting to get the gold icon.
In terms of allocating the money towards prizes, I think it’s the right decision to go for. I’m not saying it should be massively, but 2000$ from training extremely hard, getting in a tough group and getting knocked out just seems a bit harsh.
How do you expect your group to play out? Can you talk about each of the teams in your group in detail, what you expect from your potential match-up against each of them, and how do you expect to fare?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: Our group is extremely open, you have the new iBP lineup which has played only one or two official games, which makes it impossible to counter them from previous events. They changed their IGL to AZK and what play style he wants is hard to say, nevertheless they are most likely going to be hit or miss, they have the individuals to perform extremely well but I know that the lack of team play at these events can be ostentatious. They are still the favorites above us and PENTA for sure though!
PENTA played amazingly in the qualification, and I’m very impressed by especially kRYSTAL who has an extremely high top level. They can on the right day, and on the correct map, surprise everyone.
dignitas is dignitas, always making it out of the group. A extreme threat to all the teams, and they have with the addition of cajunb added something they lacked for the last period of time. Experience and coldness in the most important situations, I’m a huge admirer of cajunb and I’m sure he added everything which was needed to potentially reach the semi-final.
Our recent article “Major problems” brought up multiple issues such as the online qualifiers (cheating, DDoS), inconsistent format (best-of-one groups) with very few matches, etc. What is your stance on the qualification system and the tournament format? How would you like to improve the majors?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: We faced the sadness of DDoS attacks for the first time in our qualification vs. ESC which pretty much destroyed our chances in the end making me unable to play (had to play with stand-in) and Pimp missing out on crucial rounds, you just feel useless in the situation. In that specific game you literally can’t do anything when they catch you, not before changing IP which is not going to happen during that day.
- Add LAN Qualifiers
- Get BO3 in both the qualifier and at the event
- Double elimination (I mean, I don’t know who came up with the idea to play single in a major qualification for approximately 50.000$???)
The Wolves hope to have reason to celebrate tomorrow
Another big issue for debate right now is the CZ-75. Suggestions for it have ranged from altering its rate of fire and damage, to even making it an SMG while upping its price. Do you think it should be changed, and if so, how would you recommend Valve do it?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: What people need to realize is that the aggressive AWP-play style already was under a massive attack from the tagging. Making it nearly impossible to run away, it doesn’t even have an influence if you kill the guy or not since you are so slowed that revenge kills is a must in 7/10 of those situations.
I personally like that style of AWPing, the majority can learn to hold angles with advantages, hitting people running into your crosshair. It’s only the few who can play aggressive inferno apps with it, go hut on nuke, stand aggro in short etc. therefore it benefits the one taking chances, which is a thing all CS fans admire.
With all that being said, I still think the CZ is too strong, but I don’t have the perfect solution for it at this very moment. If you started out with adding up the prizetag for the Scout the CZ-rounds would be less dangerous as well. Not entirely safe, but a long range Scout hitting 2 people and some CZ’s close range is going to make the round 50/50 since you can’t use the distance of the AK47s (not saying that CZ is bad at long range xD but surely not as good as close up).
Obviously going into the event the favorites are fnatic and LDLC, but so far the favorites have never won a major. Is there someone else who you think could surprise us and win it all? Who do you expect to place in the top four?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: I have a feeling that Na`Vi might surprise, if you can even say that. They have been a strong team for quite some time and even though we haven’t practiced against them much I just have gut feeling about it. In case C9 makes it out of the tough matchup vs fnatic and HR, they might be a joker as well. They have always needed the last 10% and who knows what this long stay in Europe brought to them.
Top 4: LDLC, Na`Vi, fnatic, dignitas.
What do you make of this cheating scandal? Were you surprised players might have been cheating at tournaments, or did you expect it? Do you believe the players caught cheated in LAN tournaments, and do you believe more players cheated who simply haven’t been caught, yet?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: I think there is no doubt that there are still cheaters out there from the pro scene, who it is, when they're gonna get caught and what cheat it is must be an impossible task to know at this very moment. I’m so sad for the teams being affected in the qualifiers, tournaments and more. There are hard working people making an enormous effort to reach the top, and others who is trying to go around sneaky corners because the temptation is too big. I hope DreamHack will be an event without any cheaters, in case anyone cheats there he would have to have bigger balls than pasha has biceps.
You came into DH Winter via the Last Chance qualifier, where you beat 3DMAX. How big of a disadvantage is it for you not knowing until a few days that you will be competing against all these teams?
Casper "cadiaN" Møller: We obviously didn’t practice as much during that period as other teams who qualified, since we thought it was going to be a long time before next big tournament. I wouldn’t make any excuses getting into the tournament late, we are just going to try and play our game. We are in the group of surprises, and I hope that we are one of them.
Copenhagen Wolves will begin their DreamHack run tomorrow at 13:00 with a match against the new iBUYPOWER roster. In their group are also dignitas and PENTA.
